Edward Abbott (clergyman)

Edward Abbott (1841–1908) was an American clergyman, journalist, and author, son of Jacob Abbott, born at Farmington, Maine. He graduated in 1860 at the University of New York, studied from 1860 to 1862 at the Andover Theological Seminary,〔 and in 1863 served in the United States Sanitary Commission at Washington with the Army of the Potomac. He was ordained in 1863 to the Congregational ministry, and was pastor of Pilgrim Church, Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1865 to 1869. From 1869 to 1878 he was associate editor of ''The Congregationalist'', and from 1878 to 1888 editor of the ''Literary World'', whose direction he again assumed in 1895. In 1879 he was ordained a priest of the Episcopal Church and appointed rector of St. James's parish, Cambridge. His publications include ''The Conversations of Jesus'' (1875) and ''Phillips Brooks'' (1900).
